How G&K have successfully managed to battle COVID-19 and carry on teaching their 450 students.

Well it’s been an interesting few months as we have all adapted to teaching and training in a new way following the Covid 19 pandemic. As soon as the Government announced gyms had to close, with heavy hearts we immediately shut our two wonderful fully matted dojos located in Gorseinon that very evening. One that same evening, so our students from all over Swansea, Llanelli and surrounding areas could continue to train without any disruption whatsoever, working from our homes all through the night and following morning, Mr Hux our Chief Instructor and Emma our Manager both from Gorseinon, along with Dan our Senior Instructor and Welsh Team Manager from Llanelli set up a new online booking and training system for the benefit of our wonderful students.

Less than 24 hours later we were ready to open again at our usual time via the video conference platform Zoom. Since then we have continued to run our usual classes with an online booking system, with students signing on and participating in hundreds of sessions. Following this, as well as online classes, we wanted to give our students some extra tuition, so we also offer free private one to one sessions throughout the day with Mr Hux, Ian a valued Instructor and Examiner and Amy his daughter who is a trainee Instructor and Examiner. Both Ian and Amy are both very experienced Third Degree Black Belts.

To encourage our students to practice in their own homes to give them focus and direction, Mr Hux, Mrs Hux, Dan and Cait have worked long hours recording every move in the syllabus from beginner belt for Dragons to Black belt modules for our senior grades and we have even written exciting new Black Belt modules during this time.

To keep families in the same household fit and healthy whilst we battle through the pandemic, we have opened up these sessions free to parents, siblings and grandparents, so we continue the family ethos of our club in the heart of the community. Our Ladies Only class proved so popular we were asked to put on an extra weekly session.

Our World Class fighting team have been busy during lockdown. We have maintained our sparring sessions with drills and techniques online with Dan. As a special surprise over the course of these sessions, we continue to have special guests renowned in the Kickboxing World teaching our fighting team online, not only from the UK, but from all over the world including Canada and the United States Of America and we thank them all for their brilliant sessions, support and time.

Our Assistant Chief Instructor Dr Amy Huxtable BMBS MSc MRCPCH gave a talk via Zoom to help the little ones in the Club who had questions about coronavirus and she then put all the questions she was asked in a Q and A document on our private members page. Whether our students and families live in Gorseinon, Killay, Gower, Neath, Port Talbot, Ammanford or Llanelli we have kept connected with them and thank them for their support and commitment to their training programmes.
